PCOS/Ovulatory Disorders

Ovulation is the most important part of a women’s menstrual cycle. Without proper ovulation and the release of an egg, conception is impossible. Without ovulation, most women will not get a period. It is the most common cause of infertility in women; however acupuncture and Chinese herbs excel at treating ovulation problems and polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). We have successfully treated many patients with PCOS and anovulation (no ovulation) whom doctors have told them they will never be able to conceive without the help of Clomid. Many patients will respond within 2-3 months of treatments and will naturally ovulate on their own.

Ovulation Disorders Include:

  • Amenorrhea
  • Anovulation
  • PCOS
  • Premature Ovarian Failure (POF)
  • Resistant Ovarian Syndrome

Poly-cystic ovarian syndrome, also known as poly-cystic ovary disease (PCOD) is the leading cause of anovulation in women, and a major cause of infertility. It is said to affect 10 percent of women of reproductive age and up to 90 percent of women with irregular menstrual cycles.

Blood work, menstrual irregularity, and/or an ultrasound will confirm the diagnosis of PCOS. The approach from a Chinese medicine perspective is to treat underlying health issues that are causing the hormonal imbalance. Women with PCOS often have elevated male hormones that interfere with the normal production of female hormone, estrogen. This disrupts ovulation, creates multiple cysts on ovaries caused by formation of many immature eggs. Some women with PCOS have no
symptoms, most will have one or more of the following:

  • Obesity (many women we see with PCOS are not obese but very thin).
  • Excessive hair growth
  • Enlarged ovaries with many small cysts
  • Insulin resistance
  • Acne
  • Irregular or absent menstruation

Acupuncture treatments and Chinese herbal prescriptions, along with diet and lifestyle modifications will regulate the hormones, decrease insulin resistance, stabilize weight, and induce ovulation.

After a few months of treatment, many patients will start to notice signs of ovulation such as mid-cycle spike in basal body temperature, and increase in fertile cervical mucus. Menstrual cycles will become more regular; long cycles will shorten. Skin will eventually clear and excess hair will diminish. Pregnancy usually follows shortly after as well!
